Lot Report

Literature:

Ovilu Tunnillie in Oviloo Tunnillie, Marion Scott Gallery, Vancouver, 1994, unpaginated.

Jean Blodgett,  In the Shadow of the Midnight Sun: Sami and Inuit Art 2000-2005, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton, Ontario, 2007.

Note:

“At one time, when I was younger, I was shy, almost embarrassed to carve. If a woman was a carver it was a very unusual thing. People would see it as a man’s work, but today the woman has to be recognized more.”

Ovilu has assuredly gained recognition for her contributions to Inuit art. She is among the only Inuit artists to depict nudity and she is on of the first to portray herself as the subject of her carvings.

Ovilu works are celebrated for their simplicity and strong symmetry, appealing to a contemporary aesthetic that favours unadorned geometric forms.
