Note:
The artist was the wife of British-born topographical artist Sir James B. Bucknall Estcourt. Married in 1837, Caroline, an amateur painter, accompanied her husband on his overseas postings. While in Canada from 1838-1839 and later from 1844-1847, they executed Canadian views including Quebec winter scenes mainly of Montreal, Quebec, and along the St. Lawrence River regions. Some sketches such as this lot were subsequently lithographed.
