Note:

The Canadian Northern Railway was incorporated in 1899 as a result of the amalgamation of two small Manitoba branch lines, in response to the monopoly exercised by the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was built up over the next 20 years by its principal promoters, William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, to become a 16,093 km transcontinental railway system.
