Note:
Walter Schluep was one of Canada’s most creative and respected jewellery designers, creating a variety of eccentric and whimsical works over a more than 60-year career. Schluep trained in Switzerland and came to Montreal in 1954, working first with the well-known Montreal jeweller Lucas, before opening his own establishment in 1964. His work was displayed in the Canadian pavilion at Expo ’67, and he was commissioned to create a silver box as a gift for Madame De Gaulle, wife of the visiting French President. In a Time Magazine article entitled “All That Glitters”, it was stated that “Schluep designs for his own pleasure and produces work that is not so much jewellery as ready-to-wear sculpture. If some of his pieces are not the most comfortable to wear, caveat emptor.”
Schluep, who died in March of 2016, also designed the 1979 Canadian silver dollar. His work is represented at the Montreal Museum Of Fine Arts.
This ring was made in the late 1960’s as a gift to his close friend and muse.
