Literature:

Note:

Born in Akkuatuloulavik, an outpost camp near Kinngait (Cape Dorset) on southern Baffin Island, Sheojuk Etidlooie lived most of her life on the land before settling in Kinngait in the early 1990s. In her short but remarkable career, she produced images of a distinctive but diverse array of subject matter spanning the naturalistic and the fantastic.

In Firebird, Etidlooie has rendered a mysterious and marvellously luminous creature. The subject’s cloud-like form, arms swept backward, seemingly hovers above its two dangling, triangular feet. As in lot 104 of this auction, Etidlooie’s image employs to advantage the etching and aquatint processes new to artists in Kinngait in the mid-1990s.
