Lot Report

Note:

A long time politician, political reformer and newspaperman, William Lyon Mackenzie was the publisher of the 'The Colonial Advocate' who, under a pseudonym, criticized governance of Upper Canada under the 'family compact'. On June 8, 1826, eight rioters famously attacked his Queenston office, destroyed a printing press, and threw another press and trays of typeset into the nearby bay. Thirty-two years later, apparently undaunted, he was at it again with 'The Weekly Message.'
