Note:
The first Canadian naval contingent of the Great War assembled in the Gaspé Basin and set sail to England on October 3rd, 1914 to join the Allied cause. The armada included 32,000 men on 20 battle ships and 31 transports. Despite the threat presented by the Karlsruhe, the Dresden and other German warships at large in the Atlantic, and by 14 armed German liners harboured at New York, the impressive flotilla made the crossing with relative ease and arrived in Portsmouth on the evening of the 14th.
