Provenance:
Private Collection, Quebec
Note:
Fresh to the market, this enamel on board was acquired from a friend of the artist and has been housed in a private collection in Quebec ever since. This work is wonderfully composed in a true Brandtner style and palette of red, black and white opposing forms.
Brandtner was a trailblazer for abstraction in Canada. Having immigrated from Germany to Winnipeg in 1928, Brandtner brought the ideas of the German Expressionists to Western and Central Canada and was the first artist to exhibit abstract art in Montreal in 1936. Brandtner established a relationship with Paul Kastel, of Kastel Gallery, who promoted Brandtner’s work throughout his career, and continued to do so after the artist’s death in 1969.
