Note:
Coast Salish spindle whorls have been a persistent motif in Susan Point’s work since early in her career. Traditionally comprised of a small wooden or bone disk with a shaft inserted through the centre, spindle whorls were employed in the preparation of wool for use in woven garments and ceremonial blankets. Historically, often highly embellished objects of aesthetic and ceremonial significance, Point has drawn upon the spindle whorl to provide a formal structure for her art. Rescaling and changing the material of her subject, the often diminutive whorls are transformed into large free-standing or wall mounted sculptures, as in the present work in glass. Made in an edition of 15, Raven and Moon Whorl is mounted to a cedar backing board with an adze finished surface and held in place by a copper bolster.
