Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto, ON
Note:
One of the many talented children of renowned Qamani'tuaq (Baker Lake) artist Jessie Oonark, Miriam Marealik Qiyuk is a master of bustling, even crowded, compositions of figures both human and avian.
The first of two exceptional sculptures appearing in the present auction by the artist (see also lot 455), the work depicts a crowded scene inside an umiaq, or skin boat. Reminiscent in scale and presence to the remarkable sculptures of migration boats by Puvirnituq (Povungnituk) artist Joe Talirunili, Miriam’s boats are defined by the range of emotions of her subjects, which often, as in the present work, seem to span both joy and sorrow.
