Note:
Closely related to Anguhadluq’s important print Geese in September, dated to 1972, the subject of birds in flight appears in several of the artist’s exceptional images into the 1980s, as in this original drawing by the artist dating circa 1976.
Anguhadluq is well known for his intentionality in the layout of his compositions, evident here in the slightly off-kilter symmetry of the geese and qamutiiks (sleds). The composition seems to suggest that the viewer may be seeing one corner of a triangular formation of geese flying over the tundra. Notable is the uncommon consistency of perspective—the visible tops of the heads of the geese and bird’s eye view of the qamutiiks below.
One of four drawings in this auction by Anguhadluq, the present work is exceptional both for its condition and delightful vibrancy of colour.
