Private Collection, Kelso, Scotland

Note:

Both dated 1960, the contrasts between this lot and Bird Humans (lot 174 in this auction) remind us of the remarkable stylistic diversity present even in Kenojuak’s early image making.

Encouraged to experiment with varied printing techniques, but also innovative in her own right, in Vision in Autumn Kenojuak exhibits a lively rhythmic style which the artist pioneered in Inuit printmaking. Aesthetic characteristics in Vision in Autumn are present in other work by the artist included in the 1960 Cape Dorset Print Collection such as Complex of Birds and Night Spirits. The designs for all three of these works likely began with Kenojuak’s distinctive process of cutting them out as freehand templates.
