Note:
As one of the earliest artists in China to move towards the Surrealist style, Liu's works incorporate "Liu-style" humour, which alludes to societal realities. Viewing the images as prophecies, he does not aim to create beauty per se, but intends his work to arouse the public's ideological sensibilities. Under the influence of Western classical art, Lui Liu's painting style runs from the past through to the present. Chen Danqing once said that there are three characteristics of Liu''s paintings: superbly realistic techniques, exaggerated dramatic effects and difficult-to-decipher situations. Liu successfully integrates Chinese oil paintings into the vocabulary of contemporary society, opening up a path that no one has ever travelled before.
