Note:
The sky world dominates Northwest Coast legend and life. It was believed that ancestors descended from the heavens and transformed into humans. In Kwakwakawakw tradition the sun is depicted as an old man that roams the sky from East to West daily. The sun is the ancestor of all beings and is an image often seen on family crests and totem poles. This sun mask is carved in typical Kwakwaka'wakw style with a bold design and expression. This mask is probably a copy of "Mask Representing Ancestral Sun' carved by Richard Hunt in 1978 and illustrated in the book "Down From The Shimering Sky:Masks of the Northwest Coast" by Peter Macnair, Robert Joseph and Bruce Grenville.
