Note:

Emotive and dynamic, Judas Ullulaq’s sculptures are best known for their wide-eyed and open-mouthed faces, amplified by animated gestures and forms. The artist hailed from the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut, which has become known for its focus on spirits and supernatural themes. Ullulaq’s granddaughter Jennifer Ullulaq, manager of Gjoa Haven’s Heritage Centre, emphasizes the uniqueness of the region’s style, characterized by these outsized expressions, be they comical or grotesque. Of her grandfather, she explains that “he started making these weird faces into carvings, like spiritual faces… The stories that they learned through our history about Shamanism — it also inspired their artwork.”

Ullulaq came from a family of famed artists, drawing great inspiration from his nephew, Karoo Ashevak, who was also know for his other-worldly yet playful figures. Ullulaq also counted artists Charlie Ugjuk and Nelson Takkiruq as his brothers.
