A Pair of Huanghuali Low Chairs, Qing Dynasty

清 黃花梨 明式藤面矮南官帽椅

Each with a gently curved crestrail and splat, carved with an archaic dragon motif, with the arms of attractively curved form supported on standing stiles and terminating just before the front legs, with a cane seat set within the rectangular frame, the legs joined by stretchers above plain shaped aprons

About artist/note:

The low Ming-style chair is extremely rare; possibly the only example is in the permanent collection of Central Academy of Art and Design, China, documented in Wang Shixiang’s book ‘Ming Style Furniture’ 1983

矮南官帽椅極為少見,可能唯一一例現藏於中國中央工藝美術學院,著錄於王世襄1983年出版《明式家具珍賞》。王世襄在書中描述道:搭腦向後彎度較大,兩端與後足相交處安角牙。鵝脖另安,與扶手相交處也安角牙。座面以下,四面直劵口牙子。座面高度低於一般椅子約20釐米(明式椅子座高一般50釐米),如上加軟墊則仿佛是一件現代家具。明、清坐具,矮者甚少。很可能是寺院禪椅,專供趺坐而制的。
