Note:
This dramatic composition is drawn from the "Heike Monogatari" (Tale of the Heike), narrating a story from the legendary conflict between the Minamoto (Genji) and Taira (Heike) clans.
It depicts Taira no Kiyomori (1118–1181), son of a concubine of Emperor Shirakawa, enduring a fever so intense that the water boiled when he bathed, which was an act of a divine punishment for destroying a colossal bronze Buddha. He is attended by his devoted wife and son, while in the background Enma, the King of Hell, presides over the scene, flanked by two judges and a host of terrifying demons.
