Note:
Musashibo Benkei (1155-1189) in the kabuki play Kajincho remains one of the most popular modern depictions of the legendary 12th century warrior monk. His actions are the exemplification of superhuman strength and steadfast loyalty, defined by his role as the retainer for the equally legendary Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Kajincho recounts an encounter during the two warriors' flight from Kyoto.
Hasegawa Sadanobu III is the third of six generations of Hasegawas, a lineage of ukiyo-e artists that started with Hasegawa Sadanobu I (1809-1879). His subjects include kabuki plays, puppet shows (bunraku), and genre painting.
