Note:
The Hasegawa Publishing & Co. (also known as the Hasegawa-Nishonomiya Publisher) issued the collaborative series 'Night Scenes', including the artists Koho Shoda (1871-1946), Yoshimune Arai (1873-1945), Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915), Suzuki Gyosui (1898-?) and Kobayashi Eijiro (1870-1946). These prints depicted simple scenes of traditional Japanese settings using only shades of blue, grey, sepia, and black. Eijiro contributed three works to the series, including the current print.
Eijiro was inspired by European Japonisme, and even produced a print after a painting by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) titled "Nocturne: Blue and Gold - Old Battersea Bridge". Many believe that Whistler was inspired by works by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), such as "Evening Moon at Ryogoku Bridge" and "Bamboo Yards, Kyobashi Bridge".
