Ex. Coll. Dr. & Mrs. Robert W. Marshall, Toronto;
Waddington's, Toronto, December 10, 2013, lot 32;
Estate of W.A. Ross MacFadden, Toronto

Note:

A self-taught artist of landscapes and animals, William Shayer Sr. lived in Southampton, UK and painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. The late Toronto businessman and avid art collector, Ross MacFadden, particularly enjoyed Shayer's earlier beach and coastal scenes with fisherfolk and boats, as represented in this lot.

This fine painting is inscribed with "No. 11" by the artist label verso and was possibly exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists or the British Institution where Shayer exhibited over 300 works. This lot was formerly in the private collection of Dr. & Mrs. Robert W. Marshall of Toronto.
