This painting is a fine example of a coastal scene with fisherfolk, a subject in which Shayer particularly excelled. He reputedly chose to live in Shirley because of the beautiful skies that are typical of that locale. Shayer’s love of the southern coast is evident in his paintings. Acquired from Waddington's in 2010, this lot was one of the highlights by Shayer in Mr. Ross MacFadden's collection.
