In October 1942, Michener was commissioned as Provisional Second Lieutenant of the 'Great Toronto Gunners', and assigned to 9/15th Battery in the 32nd Field Regiment, a component of the 7th Reserve (Toronto) Group RCA (7th Toronto Regiment’s wartime designation).
