While undated, this work was likely executed around 1948/49 when Frederick Varley was in Doon teaching at the summer arts school there (see lot 41).

Doon is located almost mid-way between Cambridge and Kitchener and the woods of Pinnacle Hill offered some good painting subjects for artists. Carl Schaefer also painted the woods, which afforded a great view of nearby Cambridge from the top of the hill.
