JORDAN VAN SEWELL
Jordan Van Sewell was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. By age 15 he was already employed as a redcap for Canadian Pacific Railways and at 18 was a brakeman riding freight trains in Saskatchewan.. He worked for CP throughout his training at the Fine Art faculty at the University of Manitoba where he graduated in 1979.
Van Sewell left the railroad after completing his studies and made his career as a studio artist. He has created a personal iconography in his ceramic figures which embody his own feeling of nostalgia for that time when "magic" abounded. His characters, sitting staring into space, are pondering the same questions of modern life which concern us all. His sculptures are found in many collections, both private and corporate, including Great-West life Assurance, the Government of Manitoba, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
