Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto
Note:
Kim Dorland was born in 1974 in Wainwright, Alberta and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver and a Master of Fine Arts from York University in Toronto. Dorland’s works render the nostalgic spaces of the artist’s upbringing in Canada, often through a deft and distinct handling of sumptuous impasto layers and bold, broad, brush strokes. With a haunting and unexpected beauty, they draw attention to their own physicality, as well as their personal nature. Visceral and expansive, Dorland's art is fierce, eccentric and stunning. The artist’s unique vision and colour sensibility, paired with elements of abstraction function collectively to engage the viewer and challenge notions of what is expected of representation.
Dorland has exhibited globally, including shows in Milan, Montreal, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and is featured in numerous private, corporate and public collections of note including the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The artist currently lives and works in Toronto.
