THE BAROMETER- THE SUNRISE (THEATRICAL SCENE)

Gouache and pencil on japon paper; stamped with Erte’s studio address: “124, Rue de Brancas, Sevres (S.- & -O.)” to the top margin, titled in purple pencil to the top right margin, titled to a typed sheet with Erte’s Studio stamp accompanying the work with set directions inscribed as follows: “The scene represents the enormous dial of a barometer....In the large golden dial there are two niches (one on the right, the other to the left of the large round opening) in the shape of medallions, in which two singers are seated: one in black symbolizing “BAD WEATHER”, the other- in white, - “FINE WEATHER”./
In the round dial an enormous gold needle is turning. At the back of the stage is a grey curtain, made of several thicknesses of muslin./ In front of this curtain is a platform, which forms a kind of round bridge./ In front of the dial the needle is in movement, attracted by the “Bad Weather”. The singer, representing “Fine Weather” is asleep and it is the “Bad Weather” who sings a sad song:...”
