Sanguine frottage lithograph; signed and numbered 7/10 in pencil to margin, titled "Sphinx" and inscribed "Frotage" (sic) and dated "1939" to label verso. An edition of 50 on Rives paper was also published.

Note:

Ernst had no formal artistic training yet he was a prolific pioneer of the Dada and Surrealist movements. Among the many experimental techniques employed in his art, he invented "frottage" - a technique using pencil rubbings.
