By descent to his son, Ben John, accompanied by a letter from Ben dated 6 April, 1989 to Thomas Gibson Fine Art Ltd., London;
Thomas Gibson Fine Art Ltd., London from whom purchased by Mr. & Mrs. George R. Gardiner, Toronto on May 17th, 1989 accompanied by a copy of the original receipt;

Note:

The artist painted many portraits of his daughter Poppet.

Two chalk drawings by John of his daughter Poppet were sold in his studio sale including: a 3/4 length portrait black chalk drawing, “Portrait of Poppet”, 20” x 14”, and another portrait, “Portrait of Poppet and Vivien” (almost full length, facing forward) were sold at Christie’s “Drawings and Paintings From the Studio of the Late Augustus John, O.M, R.A.”, Part II, on June 21, 1963, lots 89 and 90 respectively.
