Roger Boulet, The Tranquility and the Turbulence, Markham, 1981, page 71, illustrated in colour, for the woodcut of Summer Idyll, 1926.

Note:

This watercolour is Phillip’s preparatory work for his well-known woodcut of the same title. The print, which was executed several years later after the completion of this watercolour, includes the artist’s young daughter. Phillips, his wife and family spent the summer at Lake of the Woods from 1920 to 1924.

The mother of the consignor of this lot was a student of Phillips in Winnipeg.
