Victoria Baker, Paul Peel: A Retrospective, 1860-1892, London Regional Art Gallery, London, 1986, page 46.

Baker writes that, in contrast to the previous year’s apparent inactivity, Peel was busy in 1888 working on a number of major projects and planning for the 1889 Salon: “He continued to devote himself to figure painting...His ongoing interest in themes of motherhood and childhood are expressed in three canvases produced that year...”
