The 17th Century Dutch Golden Age (Gouden Eeuw) was a period in the history of the Netherlands, in which Dutch trade, science, military, and art were among the most acclaimed in the world.

The painting is not signed. This work is similar to the Cathedral interior "St. Bavo in Harlem, 1636" painted by Pieter Saenredam illustrated in Manke, fig. 6. It is also possible that this work was executed by the Dutch artist, Hendrick van Streeck (1659–1719), discussed in Manke. Hendrick was the son of the painter Juriaen van Streeck. Hendrik became a student of Emanuel de Witte. He lived most of his life in Kerkstraat with Emanuel de Witte. Historians have written, that Hendrick learned to paint church interiors so well that his art was hard to tell apart from de Witte's.
