Note:

Vladimir Kabelik, a documentary filmmaker and photographer, was born in Zlin, Czechoslavakia in 1951. During the Cold War, he escaped from communist Czechoslovakia and lived in Austria and Switzerland before settling in Toronto. Since then, he has spent most of his time taking photographs, filming and teaching. As a filmmaker, Kabelik produced documentaries for all major Canadian broadcasters (many were about photography and photographers). As a photographer, he published and exhibited his work in Europe, North America, and Japan. Kabelik recently donated ten of his films to the Library and Archives Canada, Ottawa and is currently discussing another donation of some of his vintage photographs to the Archives. He has been a teacher for over 30 years at Sheridan College in Ontario.

Kabelik states, "I still see myself taking this shot just a few steps from my first Canadian job [at] PFA Film Labs on Adelaide Street, Toronto. [...] The photograph was taken with a 4"x 5" Linhof camera. The building upon which this image was painted still exists, although now it is obscured by the Bell TIFF Lightbox structure."

"Campari” is one of only five signed and numbered archival colour prints issued; two of the five were immediately sold by Marcia Rafelman Fine Arts in Toronto, one is being kept in his family archive and two plates of this small edition, one being this lot, is available to collectors.
