Provenance:
Austin Galleries, Schaumburg, Illinois;
From whom purchased by Frederick Geisler, Livonia, New York on September 2, 1980 with a copy of the original receipt and with a copy of their Certificate of Assurance as "Circus Wagon";
Private Collection, Ontario
Note:
The circus held a particular fascination for Appel, who made prints, sculptures and even clown-inspired chairs. The bright colours, exuberant visual vocabulary and childlike sense of wonder represented by the circus mirrored Appel’s own artistic interests, providing an ideal subject through which to communicate these ideas.
