Provenance:

From the personal collection of the late Joanne Bergen, who began her 40-year career as an Art Dealer in the mid 1970s in Paris, purchased by her at an exhibition in Germany around the time of the artist's death;
By descent to the present Private Collection, Ontario

Note:

Seff Weidl was a sculptor, printmaker and illustrator who studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Munich Academy) in Munich from 1936 to 1938. In 1948, a selection of his work was exhibited in the Württembergische Kunstverein Stuttgart and national and international solo exhibitions followed. Eventually, Weidl went to the United States. Beginning in 1950, he exhibited at the Kleeman Gallery in New York, followed by two shows in 1952 and 1955 and also exhibited at the Neue Galerie Linz in 1951, the Gallery Vömel Düsseldorf in 1952 and at the Städtische Galerie, Munich, in 1953. Weidl was commissioned to create several monumental works in the public realm, such as the bronze figure of Colonia above the main portal of the new Cologne City Hall.

This bronze is unnumbered but probably from a limited edition of ten. Two other bronzes from this edition were found in our research. One sold on 23 March, 2019 at Karbstein Peter, Düsseldorf, Germany (the catalogue entry did not give an edition number), and the other bronze, numbered 1/10, sold at Neumeister Kunstauktionen on Thursday, September 24, 2020 (lot 1062).
