Provenance:

Private Collection, Ontario
Acquired directly from the artist

Note:

Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, a young Shayne Dark moved to Germany with his family, following his father’s career in the Canadian Air Force. Dark began regularly visiting museums in neighbouring European countries. He was particularly interested in British sculptors like Richard Deacon, Tony Cragg, William Tucker and Anish Kapoor, and later, American sculptor Richard Serra. This early introduction to the visual arts provided an escape from his struggle with dyslexia, and it was through this non-verbal form that he learned to express himself.

From living amongst some of Western civilization’s greatest cultural markers, to living lakeside in Ontario, Dark has managed to successfully bring together these divergent influences in both of his indoor and outdoor sculptures. His site-specific artworks are colourful embodiments of the friction between industry and nature.

The maquette for “Double Take” represents the public artwork poised at the confluence of Mount Pleasant Road and Jarvis Street, just south of Bloor Street East. It is an eye-catching monumental sculpture for pedestrians and commuters alike, and a welcome pop of colour to a long stretch of north-south traffic. It is situated next to a condominium designed in the style of Mies van der Rohe by Wallman Architects, placing the sculpture in conversation with its urban environment.

Dark’s work is in the permanent collections of BMO, MoMO, Telus, KPMG, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, the Canada Council Art Bank, and other corporate, private and institutional collections.
