Robinson has been creating suspended works since the 1990s, defying the limits of gravity and pushing against the boundaries of sculpture. He explains that “the function of gravity as both fact and metaphor is the central paradox of the sculptor’s creative process. Under the sway of this aesthetic confluence, the objective viewer of a figure in space becomes implicated into the microcosm of the artwork by means of a kind of metaphorical vertigo. This visceral response is the essential persuasive mechanism of the medium of sculpture.”[1]
In "Archer," Robinson’s interest in symbolism is on full display. The lone figure is tethered to his environment by a single strand of cable, counterbalanced by an arciform shape at the other extreme of the sculpture. One cannot but think that the protagonist is caught in an allegorical attempt to string the bow, eternally thwarted by the enormity of the perhaps Sisyphean task. Yet he perseveres, this tension that anchors him to earth.
