Provenance:

Private Collection, Quebec

Note:

Known for her sculptures of elongated, joyful dancers, Wertheimer’s focus has long been on the beauty of the human spirit. Her love of the figure is again on display in this dramatic composition, which displays the extended limbs and elegant draperies that so captivated Wertheimer’s eye. She notes that her work always strives to capture “the elevation of the human spirit” and present “symbols of new beginnings and caring relationships.” [1] Her three angels descend down a staircase as if on stage, like three ballerinas bringing good tidings of great joy. The three figures appear as if three parts of the same movement: arms fluttering as they approach the viewer.

Born in Poland in 1926, Wertheimer was raised in Montreal. She studied art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in Florence. She is the recipient of grants from the Italian Government, a Canada Council Travel Grant and an Elizabeth T. Greenshields Grant. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections; many of her sculptures are located in public venues in North America, Asia and Europe.
