Lot 38
Esther Wertheimer (1926-2016)

Additional Images

Provenance:
Private Collection, Montreal
Note:
Collectors of Wertheimer’s work will note the experimental tone of this sculpture. Known primarily for her depictions of elongated, joyful dancers, here the artist appears to compact and abstract her usual figurative forms. The viewer is left to wonder if these are human shapes, ascending into the heavens--or if they draw inspiration from the avian realm, a metamorphosis between species.
Setting the more narrative elements aside, this sculpture displays the signature coloured patina which Wertheimer enjoyed working with, all the better to convey the brightness and exuberance of her subjects. Each side has been given its own unique colourway, ensuring that viewers will discover nuances for years to come.
Born in Poland in 1926, Wertheimer was raised in Montreal. She studied art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in Florence. She is the recipient of grants from the Italian Government, a Canada Council Travel Grant and an Elizabeth T. Greenshields Grant. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections; many of her sculptures are located in public venues in North America, Asia and Europe.
