Provenance:

Dominion Gallery, Montreal gallery label to the underside, Inventory No. H3268 entered in the DG stock books in January 1966;
Sold on June 5, 1967 to "Camp Ogama, Ontario." Camp Ogama, on Fox Lake near Huntsville, a private co-educational overnight camp for children aged 6-16 that operated between 1946 and 1971;

Note:

The artist was represented by Max Stern at the Dominion Gallery, Montreal. "Woman and Swan" is entered in the DG stock books along with several other works by Schleeh so it is likely that this lot was acquired directly from the artist.

Born in Koenigsfeld, Germany, Hans Schleeh studied in German at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts. In 1951, he emigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal where he began his career by executing sculptures at the basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, in the Québec City region. In 1960, he presented his first solo exhibition at Dominion Gallery. Two years later, his works were shown at the New Art Centre Gallery in New York. His large marble sculpture Swan is on display at Place des Arts in Montréal.
