‘Historic Ukraine from Above’ Fundraising Auction

Fundraise Ukraine & The Mentor Family Network Organization (MFNO) are raising funds to help Ukrainian refugees through aid and resettlement services in Canada.

MFNO mentorship helps Ukrainian families in their first few months in Canada get settled and become independent. Currently the demographic is mainly women and children, as the war continues and many men remain to fight for their country and democracy.

This auction features 50 aerial photographs of the monuments and architecture of Ukraine, taken between 2009-2021, printed on canvas. Each image is accompanied by a brief historical synopsis in English and Ukrainian, compiled by the photographer, Zinoviy (Zenyk) Pidperyhora, with English translation by his sister Nadiya Sytarchuk (Pidperyhora).

Most of the images were taken by the DJI Phantom 3 and DJI Phantom 4 Prо drone camera. Almost every image is a panorama stitched together from many photographs taken from a single point at an altitude of 100-350m (up to 16 in some cases), to achieve the highest resolution and the best representation of the object. Two images were taken from the roof of a high-rise building of the computer centre in 2009.

“Each person has their own mission and special role, which is clearly defined in crucial historical moments. Artists cannot be on the sidelines, they have their own, no less important front. They too are at the forefront. With artistic means of expression, they proclaim to the whole world the beauty of our Earth and the universal values ​​of its peoples, glorifying the democratic values, freedom and independence of their country gained in the difficult struggle,” the photographer explains.

Zenyk’s art project began in 2016. The impetus was an attempt to master the art of photography and video shooting with a quadcopter. Zenyk had previously gained experience with architectural and landscape photography by creating illustrations for various scientific, historical and local publications: “Undoubtedly, the object of my interest is still the most fascinating and beautiful places, monuments of history and architecture of Ukraine.”

Many of the aerial photographs in the auction were shown in Lviv at the Gery Bowman Gallery, in Kyiv at the Koleso Theater on Andriyivsky Uzviz, and then in Toronto at the KUMF Gallery. The whole project is Zenyk’s private initiative and is not sponsored by any state or public organization. His work on the project was slated to continue, with plans to expand the range of monuments and buildings which have been photographed, insofar as he has only been able to photograph western Ukraine. Sadly, only the first part of the project has been created, as further efforts have been suspended due to Russia’s invasion.

Zenyk has graciously donated the right to print these photographs, so that MFNO can raise funds to help Ukrainians displaced by the war resettle in Canada, while collectors can hold onto a memory of Ukraine’s rich and beautiful history. Glory to Canada! Glory to Ukraine!

Fundraise Ukraine та The Mentor Family Network Organization (MFNO) збирають кошти для допомоги громадянам України, які виїхали через війну. MFNO допомагає українським сім’ям протягом перших декількох місяців у Канаді з усіма офіційними справами, роботою, школою, з їжею та одягом, тимчасовим розміщенням, іпереходом у незалежне життя. На даний час це переважно жінки з дітьми, так як мужчини залишились обороняти
свою країну і демократію.

Цей аукціон виставляє видрукувані на канві 49 фотокартин історичних та архітектурних пам’яток України. Автор Зіновій Підперигора (Зеник) довершує їх коротким описом на українській мові з перекладом на англійську.

Про фотографа

«У кожної людини є своя місія, своя особлива роль, що яскраво визначається у вирішальні історичні моменти. Митці не можуть бути осторонь, у них є свій, не менш важливий фронт, вони також на передовій. Мистецькими виразовими засобами вони заявляють на цілий світ про красу нашої Землі і загальнолюдські цінності її мешканців, прославляючи здобуті в нелегкій боротьбі демократичні цінності, свободу і незалежність своєї країни», зауважує фотограф.

Артпроєкт Зіновія Підперигори розпочато у 2016 році, а поштовхом до цього сприяли перші спроби в опануванні мистецтва фото та відеозйомки за допомогою квадрокоптера. Так вдалося перенести весь набутий раніше досвід архітектурної і пейзажної зйомки при створенні ілюстрацій для різних наукових та історико-краєзнавчих видань.

«Безсумнівно, об’єктив моєї камери, як і раніше, знаходить найцікавіші і найкрасивіші місця, пам’ятки історії та архітектури України»– каже автор. Багато аерофотозйомок, представлених на цьому аукціоні, були вперше показані у Львові в галереї Ґері Боумена, а пізніше в Києві в театрі «Колесо» на Андріївському узвозі та в Торонто в галереї КУМФ. Весь цей проєкт є виключно приватною ініціативою автора і не спонсорується жодною державною чи громадською організацією.

Робота над проєктом мала продовжуватись, з планами розширення території фотографування, так як досі це відбувалось лише на заході України. Шкода, але наразі виставлено лише раніше відзнятий матеріал, зйомки припинені через віроломний напад Росії і захоплення нею частини території миролюбної України. Ми
сподіваємось, що зображені на картинах історичні пам’ятки вціліють протягом війни, і ми зможемо їх ще побачити наяву. Зеник люб’язно надав MFNO право на видрук своїх робіт, щоби Організація на виручені кошти допомагала у Канаді українцям прибулим внаслідок війни.
