Judas Ullulaq’s figures radiate large personalities, the emotional disposition of his characters are sometimes ambiguous, but never restrained in the intensity of their expression. They are pervaded throughout by a sense of narrative humour, from an artist well known for his jocular disposition.
Early works by Ullulaq are especially notable for the fineness and comparative precision of their carving. Successful Fisherman is one of three remarkable works by Ullulaq in the present auction, and one of two early examples epitomizing the artist’s mid-1980s style.
