A Painting of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha and the Kings of Hell, Joseon Dynasty, 19th Century

Additional Images

Note:
In Korea, Buddhist monasteries emphasized communal worship, with monks and laity chanting sutras and placing offerings before religious images. As a result, large and brightly coloured paintings became a popular feature in temples during the Joseon dynasty. This painting depicts Ksitigarbha, who is believed to intercede on behalf of people condemned to torments in hell, surrounded by the kings who reside in the various hells.
