Provenance:

Private Collection, Winnipeg

Note:

Jack Butler lives and works in Hamilton, Ontario. His art production reflects the hybridity of his interest in medical research and an extended engagement with Inuit culture.

He arrived with his wife, the artist Sheila Butler in Baker Lake, Nunavut in 1969 as a Special Projects Officer and in 1970 they founded the Sanavik Inuit Cooperative, an organization of Inuit artists which began to produce annual significant print editions. He left Baker Lake in 1972 and continued as consultant through 1976. His stay in Nunavut had a profound effect on his own paintings, drawings and prints.

Butler's work had been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous private and public collections across Canada, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada.
