Note:
Liv Valmestad is a Norwegian-Canadian artist who lives in Winnipeg. She has a BFA from the University of Saskatchewan, graduate degrees from Queen's and Western Universities and a post-graduate diploma in art from Ringebu College, Norway.
Valmestad has exhibited in several countries including Italy, United States and Canada, and has work in public collections including the University of Saskatchewan, University of Manitoba, the Millennium Library, the Buhler Collection, the Province of Manitoba Art Bank and Imago Mundi Luciano Benetton Collection, Venice.
Inspired by the landscape, Valmestad's paintings are about a strong connection to place and inter-being. Integrally part of everyone and everything, Nature’s calming and rejuvenating qualities are reduced to colour and light, as seen in "Sight Lines", 2014. She uses landscape as a vehicle for highlighting the crisis of environmental degradation and hopes to encourage our reconnection to the natural world through the ideology of deep ecology.
In April/May 2019, Valmestad attended the NES Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland. In addition to continuing her exploration of ambiguous space and the effects of light, she focused on the sublime as an affective category. These works were on display in "Land(e)scapes" at the Quiet Room Gallery, St. John’s College, University of Manitoba and before that were in the exhibition "In Between S(p)LACES", December 20, 2019-February 19, 2020 in Minneapolis.
