The Work & Artist Bio
This catastrophic gem of a painting won’t leave you after you have seen it. Kim Dorland’s oil on canvas ominously called Panic, 2022, is a rendering of our climate desperation; through its tragic beauty, trees that were once protected in a lavender world have become incandescent candles of loss. Floats of black cinder fly out of the centre of the conflagration like ruined butterflies. Panic takes a line from WB Yeats in its embodiment of a terrible beauty.
Born in 1974 in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada, Dorland holds an MFA from York University in Toronto, and a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, in Vancouver. He has exhibited globally, including shows in Milan, London, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. His work is featured in the Contemporary Art Foundation (Japan), The Sander Collection (Berlin); Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; Glenbow Museum (Calgary); Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Art Gallery of Alberta, the Audain Art Museum and numerous private collections. Dorland currently lives and works in Toronto and is represented by Equinox Gallery, Vancouver and Patel Brown, Toronto and Montréal. His work has been featured in publications including Border Crossings, Whitehot Magazine, Juxtapoz and Hyperallergic. Dorland’s recent solo exhibitions include “The moment before the moment after” at Equinox Gallery (2023), “Is This It?” at Patel Brown, Montréal (2023), and “I Hold With Those Who Favour Fire” at NBB Gallery, Berlin (2022).
