The Work & Artist Bio
Lisa Stinner-Kun’s digital archival inkjet print titled Memorial (curtains), 2023, is a recent example of this Winnipeg-based photographer’s unerring sense of composition and her ability to draw mystery and drama from unpeopled, empty spaces. In the curtained stage area, her palette shifts from black and red to blue-tinged black and presents a fine balance with the lines of scalloped seat backs that seem suspended in grey space. The orderly arrangement of theatre seat backs calls up Hiroshi Sugimoto’s haunting theatre photos. This elegant photograph quietly performs itself.
Lisa Stinner-Kun is an artist based in Treaty 1 Territory (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Since graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in Photography, Stinner-Kun has shown her photographic work in exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her New Material project was recently shown in “Moving Matter: Between Rock and Stone,” an exhibition at the School of Art Gallery, University of Manitoba. Her work is concerned with the photographic reconstruction of the human-built environment. Stinner-Kun’s most recent project titled Mid-Century Modest is being generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council. Her “Construct” series was recently featured in Medium Format Magazine and she is a two-time recipient of a Canadian Architect Magazine photography award (2020/22). Her work has also been featured in Border Crossings and published in juried collections such as Carte Blanche and Flash Forward. Stinner-Kun is currently teaching at Martha Street Studio and has been a regular instructor at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art, where she received her BFA.
