Note:

The gentleman's cane was presented to Benjamin Franklin Carley by his three sons: Abram, Alfred and William. Carley was the son of Abram Carley, a successful farmer who died in 1864. Benjamin Carley was born in New York State in 1814. (He was named after his great grandfather: Benjamin Carley SR.) He was 17 years old when he came to Canada with his parents, taking over the farm at Lot 7, concession 5 of York county, Township of King.

Benjamin Carley belonged to the Methodist Church, was a Reformer in politics and had a common school education. He married Martha Clark in 1837, who originally emigrated from Pennsylvania. They had ten children - nine survived. The children were Abram, Sarah, Charles (who died), Nancy, Alfred, Charlotte, william, Lavinia, Martha and Mary. Benjamin Franklin Carley died on November 20, 1968 at 93 years. Mary - the youngest daughter - married in to the Egan family and by descent it remained in the Harold Egan collection until delivered to you.
