Provenance:

Collection of Walter R. G. Stewart, Toronto, ON;
Acquired by the father of the current owner, 1970;
By descent to the Collection of Dr. William and Fran Barnett, London, ON

Note:

Untitled (Coldwell, Lake Superior) is a thrilling discovery of a prime Group of Seven-period sketch of the North Shore of Lake Superior by A.Y. Jackson. Dated on its verso, “1919 (as per George Gardner + Paul Duval),” the work must be from a few years later because Jackson first went sketching beyond Algoma to the North Shore in 1921. The composition is strikingly similar to Lawren S. Harris’s, Coldwell Bay, North of Lake Superior, ca. 1923 [sic] in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada (acc. no. 4598) and appears as if the artists were painting shoulder to shoulder. The unmistakable qualities of Jackson and Harris in the respective sketches shows the close connections the artists had with each other and their subjects at this high moment in the Group’s history.
