Note:

Although Verner moved back to England in 1880, he returned to Canada from time to time and continued to send paintings back to be exhibited by the Royal Canadian Academy, Ontario Society of Artists and Art Association of Montreal, while also working to build up interest in his work in England, broadening his market considerably.

In England, Verner painted variations on themes drawn from his previous Canadian oeuvre, adding new or different elements and subtracting others, much as a composer would rework the chords to make new musical arrangements. This lot was inspired by his earlier sketches drawn from life of Sioux teepees that date to 1867 (Collection of the National Gallery of Canada,) and his major canvas of 1877, “A Prairie Sunset,” in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
