Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto
Note:
Mara Korkola is fascinated with places that are at once anywhere and nowhere. One has to look no further than to her series of small-scale, gem-like paintings to see how this theme is represented in her work. No Place 168, a diptych from the No Place series, depicts city streets on a rainy night. She contrasts the shimmering orbs of orange and red taillights, illuminated street signs, and bright white beams of oncoming cars against the cool blackness of the sky and road ahead. The scene is of no place in particular, yet certainly familiar, as all urban dwellers have shared this view from the driver’s seat.
Korkola studied art at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Wichita State University in Kansas and the University of Texas at San Antonio where she received her Master of Fine Arts degree. Her works have been shown in Canada, the United States, and Europe and are included in many private and corporate collections including Fidelity Investments, Hydro Quebec and Scotia Bank. Korkola is a recipient of several grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. She currently resides and works in Toronto.
